This one is worth a read below .....
Island Living: Weird Hatteras Island Old Wives’ Tales (and Husbands’ Tales) that are Actually True
The wild persimmons need to be left until after the first frost, local figs are better you can find a jar of preserves at the Cotton Gin.
It used to be Mission Figs from Roanoke Island, it's not on the jar anymore.
The stewed pie bread is definitely Hatteras because it doesn't exist on the internet. I've always called it chicken and dumplings .....
Chicken & Dumplings
1 pk. boneless chicken breasts
2 boxes of Flako pie crust
3/4 stick butter
salt & pepper to tasteCook the chicken in a large dutch oven pan 3/4 full of water with 3/4 stick butter, salt & pepper for 30 minutes. Roll out Flako "flat" on a floured counter or board and flour on both sides. Slice Flako into 3 inch slices and put into the water with the chicken after you have shredded the chicken with a fork. Don't stir much after adding the dumplings. Cook 20 minutes, you can add a little more water if it needs it.
Harris Teeter has been selling the boxes of Flako pie crust, Food Lion hasn't had any lately.
Haven't seen the old gray man, I know a jolly roger along with partial head of Blackbeard appearing on the weather radar image is a bad sign.
