Surf Report + Other Observations

Date: Sunday, 7-29-07, at 11:20 p.m.

7/7 - 7/14. ******* Rodanthe (Mirlo beach south to pier). SW to NW winds. Water brown. Wind avg. 15-20 knots. Surf high.

Bait = shrimp, art. bloodworms, squid. Too brown for artificials.

Fished daily first light till 1000 hrs + last 2 hours before sunset.

Result = 1 bottom feeder per day!! Mostly sharks.

***************

7/14 - 7/21. Waves. S to SW winds. Water brown. Wind avg. 15 - 20 knots. Very high surf.

Bait = shrimp, art. bloodworms, squid.

Fished daily first light till 0930 hrs. + some evenings.

Result = 2 per day!! Bottom feeders. Again - mostly sharks.

***************

7/21 - 7/28 Waves. N, to NW winds. Winds avg. Water clear. Winds avg 15-25 knots.

Bait same as above. Clear enuf for artificals but nothing there.

Fishing time same as above.

Result = 1 per day. Small croakers, 2 small blues, 1 trophy pompano.

In summary, FISHING ABYSMAL!!!!!!!!! Only one bite on art. bloodworms. Best bait = squid. (Have fun finding some thats not paper thin)!!! 2nd worst catching in 26 years (summer or fall.)

Few asides:
***Weather atypical. Cooler air, windier.
***Mosquitos by 7/16 merciless mornings and evenings.
***Dolphins not around.
***Rip tides 7/22-7/26. (Not that it bothered most of the "tourons".)
***Beach etiquette. Surfer "wannabees' = 0%. Touron swimmers about the same. Still have the whole ocean to swim in but must instead swim thru fishermans lines - and repeatedly too!!
***Touron of the month. Waves beach. Small boy, maybe 4 years old, walking alone apprx. 1100 hrs near wetline heading north. No adults present. Beach about 2/3 full of 'nightclub tans'. 10 minutes later, guy is walking around surf possibly looking for something. Ask him if he's missing a little boy. He says "Yes". Describe boy seen including orange shirt. Point waaaaaaaay down beach where boy is still visible. Guy walks down beach in direction of little boy, but keeps pausing. Keep pointing at the child who is still visible down beach. After 15 minutes guy finally catches upwith the child. At this point 2 women start looking for the child (now remember about 25 minutes has gone by since the little guy went past headed north!!) Guy and child walk back past. No comment from the guy. (Guarantee - had I not asked if looking for lost child, pointed in direction child was walking, and persisted in waving guy down the beach that little boy would have been lost!!
***More dogs on beach than ever - tho most on leashes. 10% of owners clean up the solid waste. How nice!!
***Crabbing. Abysmal as the fishing. 0600 Currituck sound, small pier. Noticed dead crabs in water on arrival. Soon PA kids all over us w/ crab traps, lines and nets. Why the dead crabs. Oh, "we were here yesterday and caught those." They were proceeding to "recatch" the dead ones as we left. Parents arrived about 1/2 hour after the kids. Of course never told kids to be polite to others. "Steely" glares don't get thru to "Steelers" fans.
***Tho fireworks now banned on HI after fireworks burned down cottage, some still fired up evenings.
***Bonfires still being built way above the wet line and not extinguished.
***Much less beach littering than last year.
***Many more 4-6' deep holes dug near wet line - and of course not filled in before dark. Not are parents clueless reguarding danger of digging that deep, but they also don't care about others falling in after dark.
***Best sight. Atlantic ray about 200 ft offshore repeatedly coming completely out of water. Size of a small car!!
***Restaurants in general going downhill and becoming more pricey. Family nearly poisoned at one while the staff swatted flies mear their table. Are still some good ones left. For dinner try "Captains Table" Buxton. Burgers still great at Top Dog Cafe in Waves.
***Food Lion still Food Lion. Harris Teeter rumored for Rodanthe not yet in place.
***New construction nearly at standstill. Lots of properties for sale.
***Keeper shells, long gone. Even the broken bits and pieces have left for the north in plastic grocery bags.
***Biggest hoot. Cottage vac not picking up dirt. (Aside - Daughter had to "field strip" a vac in cottage last year to get it to work and in so doing had to handle lots of renters toenails jammed inside.) Told her this year to check out the vac as she was an expert after last year. You guessed it - more toenails!! But that wasn't the best part. The reason the vac had no suction was because some bozo attached a plastic "Food Lion" bag rather than a vac bag!!
