The parking area is on the east south side right at the bridge and is open, they are using part of it for working on the new bridge.
You could catch something big there during the summer. I wished more charter boat captains would use youtube.

For something big you would have to walk the fish into shore or the best way is a drop net like they have on the end of the piers.
The treble hooks with the lead weight on a small rope also works wrap it around the line one time slide it down and will hook it in the gill.
I use spinning, you just need a little heavier sinker 3 or 4 oz because of the current and fish on which side the tide is flowing away from it.
If you need anything Oregon Inlet Fishing Center has a pretty good little store and tackle shop inside the place, I avoid their cooked hot dogs.
There's a small shallow depression a couple of feet deep the fish like almost half way between 1/2 to 3/4 out on the east side of the catwalk.
I had somebody show it to me on the boat radar and it's in angry faced sinker throwing range.
A couple of old famous surf fishing spots is the beach at the rock jetty and the boiler wreck further south on Pea Island at the visitor center.
There's good places on the north side, wading the sound at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center or walk down the unpaved road at Bodie Island Lighthouse.
The last parking area on the beach road in South Nags Head where it turns to the main highway is a great surf fishing spot more so in early fall.
