Well Tomorrow, March 1st starts Rock fishing here up on the Great Roanoke River in Rock Fish Capital of Weldon, North Carolina. So with this in mind, today I jumped into my Pathfinder and took off to see just what was happening on this end of the river. Much to my amazement the Shad were being caught left and right from the shore bank. This is a GREAT sign for the near opening of Rock Fish (Striper) season. Shad come up the river prior to the run of the Stripers to spawn up here near the rapids. It has been several years since the Shad have showed up in this abundance so I will hope and pray that this will be the leader for a great Rock fish season up here in Weldon. I even saw a few little rock fish being caught. The fisherman as I used jigs, the shad seemed to like the white with the chartreuse tail. Some of the fishing people were using spoons but I have to say that I observed more being caught on jigs then the spoons however the small Rock fish loved the little spoons. When the rock fish come up here to spawn, the locals call it fighting and that is a treat to watch for you can actually see the males push the females to the top and start bumping them and then the males fertilize the eggs which stay suspended in the top of the water in the fast currents of the river. I hope what I observed today will be the start of a great season on the Roanoke River in Weldon, North Carolina. Happy fishing to all and I am off to hold a tight line somewhere before this weather here goes from this near 70 degree day back down to the 30's come Monday. If you don't like the weather here in north eastern North Carolina, just hang around, drink a cold glass of ice tea with a spot of lemon and what till tomorrow for the weather is sure to be different. Peace, Debbie
