As for the other seems like the rest want to leave.

It wasn't a lost cause, they made their point to the media which made the public aware about what's going on.

Most of the big city masses of people wouldn't understand current government land management practices or ocean and how that effects them.

Looks more like they have the rest trapped and are not letting them leave, if he wanted to be a good martyr he should have just ran away.

If it was me I'd do some ice fishing / hunting have a good time and wait for them to lose interest then slip out, no need for jail or violence.

Some people have a real hate for the government as a whole, it's really individuals in it with their own radical views and power.

What the FBI should do is say publicly the people that are left won't go to jail if they leave and see if that ends it.
