If I may add...soft soil down about 10" a must. Only organic added was fall leaves turned under in spring. If memory serves used round sand (yes round) to help keep soil loose. Always used "Danver's Half Long". Pulled at 8" long and 2" at top. Fantastic taste. Left in 1/2 row and covered w/ 4" of leaves late fall. Had em all winter and they grew wider and even better tasting. And thats in winter on the North Coast!
