You might want to consider getting a 1000 LB rated Stair Tamer, the best thing in the world for older folks. It's expensive but was the best deal at the time and well worth it. I went through the same thing, I had to carry the groceries up. He is probably going to start having a hard time getting up the steps with the bad knees maybe sooner than later and probably will get to the point of him having to stop and rest more often after some of the steps.

You have to get it serviced "greased" when it starts squeaking while moving maybe every 3 or 4 years. It's stainless steel a little rust not bad.

It moves real slow and ours is designed so that it would be hard to get hurt and has yellow up, down, stop hand held remotes like for a garage door.

The guy will tell you it wasn't meant for people so it's not his fault such as kids could do stupid things playing.
