More Recollection

As a boy, grew up across street from a cemetery which was our playground. We were poor, by todays standards, but we didn't know it. Baseball, football, skiing, hockey, fishing (makin this a valid post here), berry pickin, buckeye collecting, sled riding, trapping, worm pickin, bag lunches on the abandoned railroad trestle, you name it, we did it all there and w/o getting run out as workers were all dads customers. They even brought this Capt night crawlers they found while digging graves (by hand) each day.
We incurred all the minor injuries kids used to suffer playing in there, and were even shot at a few times. But we loved it.
Was there in a vandalized mausoleum we first witnessed a decomposed body. (Sister still hasn't forgiven this Capt for that).
Theft also a problem. NE brewer named Leisy was buried in large mausoleum there. Sky blue dome...till slowly tile by tile the blue was gone. Tho police gave special attention, thieves got every piece....pure 1" copper.
But, I digress...
A great place till sundown, when long shadows crept in and a feeling of uneasiness set in. Had to be on bikes and outa there quick lest we be trapped when gates were locked for the evening.
There was a big cave there, well into a valley. We used candles inside. Never saw anyone/anything in or around it. Wondered a lot about it as we tried in vain to duplicate it nearby. Never got more than about 3 ft. dug tho. Too tough for us.
Hey, we were kids and times were simpler then...at least so we thought.
Turns out we were probably in the den of "Orange Eyes", a legendary monster alleged (we found out years later) to reside in "our" cemetery.
There are things that scare you as kids and then there are things that scare you as an adult...and those are much worse. But recollection of that adult stuff is for another "Doldrums" day.
