For the shock leader your suppose to figure 10 pounds for every ounce of weight, most use a 50 pound shock leader for surf fishing wrapped around the spool about five times. Everybody has their own favorite knots to join the shock leader to the running line. The best knot is the one that you can tie correctly. If you need a knot that won't break make an 8 to 12 inch loop in your smaller running line with Bimini Twist or Aussie Braid and use the loop as a doubled running line to attach it to the shock leader with a back to back Uni-Knot or Improved Blood Knot. If your in a hurry a Spider Hitch will work for the loop but it's not as strong as the Bimini Twist or Aussie Braid. When your attaching a mono shock leader to braid use a Double Surgeon's Knot to double the running line and don't use braided line when fishing a crowd.
