How high up the tree was the swarm of bees?
Just had the same thing happen here in late May. Nests are usually up at least 10-12' high, mostly in dead trees. Most likely a swarm looking for a new home.
We called a bee keeper and he came and got them for nothing. I guess you could call them free bees.

Have a good time, wow 34 years. Hope to meet up with all late this summer.
