Shame. Remember in 80's never even locked the door when away from the cottage in Whalehead. Didn't mind kids walking the beach alone, or walking street just after dark w/ a flashlight and giggles.
But that was a simpler time. A better time. Glad the kids got to experience it. Every day was a new adventure and new memories. Horses under the house, adopting a lost dog only to find out it lived around the corner, shells, rafts, stargazing, storms, bonfires, exploring, buying souvenirs for friends, sending post cards (which generally arrived after we returned home.) It stamped them indelibly. To this day not one of the kids or their families has ever missed the summer family trip.
Younger son had first case of puppy love there. Used to go for a walk each evening just before dark in hopes the little girl would be out on her porch. She never was. Last nite of that trip, in desperation, he sucked it up and went up and knocked. For several summers after they continued their romance. Never more than a walk and a "see ya". But then, the parents divorced, never to return to the beach. Wife left for another woman. Kids wrote a lot in the beginning, but finally drifted apart. Her dad still sends us a Christmas and anniversary card every year.
Pardon the "wayback" machine (Mr. Peabody - if you remember.) While it seems like only a few years, this will be year 34 in a row for this Capt's crew.
