Pier Fishing

This year we are coming Aug. 30 and have a house that has unlimited pier passes.
Whats good tackle to bring?
Do I have a chance to catch big fish on my first trip?
How about the Kids any age to young?
Sorry for all the questions but we are very excited about the passes and I would like to make the best of the trip and have some knowledge before coming.
