Question: Daily creel limits

When we do a rockfish charter in the Chesakeake, 6 people, we keep a total of 16 fish. 2 per fisherman, 2 for mate, 2 for captain. Here is my question: When I surf fish in NC , my wife, son and his wife, 2 grandkids are with me, total of 6. Only my son and I fish, using 4 rods. All adults have valid fishing licenses. How many legal puppy drum are we allowed to keep per day? 2,4, or 6? I am not about violating the law...just want to do what is legal. I am sure a summons would be very expensive.
