Sound side fishing

We're staying MP 40, tried some sound fishing yesterday near the house & up at the new bridge (per bait shop advice). Saw lots, hooked nothing, save a freaky piranah looking thing. Used minnows & artificial. Any tips, tricks, spots for us dummies? :)
