Coastal North Carolina. Hurricane Maria is not expected to be so much of a rain event as it is anticipated to be an extended tropical storm force wind (39-73 mph) event, creating both ocean and sound side flooding. Cape Lookout area north, including Pamlico Sound, area creeks and rivers on up and through OBX are expected to be most affected.
“The prolonged gusty north to northeast winds will lead to storm surge inundation of 2 to 4 feet above ground level mainly for the beaches north of Cape Lookout and adjacent to the southern Pamlico Sound.” Source: NHC
